Russell cancelled his appointment and sent Mr. Claussen on his way. He called Sherriff Hodges’ office but he wasn’t in, so he left a message with the deputy.

The lawyer sat at his desk, staring at the knife, thinking about the Beasley story and that there was obviously more to it than he thought. He had been around long enough to hear the local legends about the hidden riches of Sebastian Bagot a hundred times over. There was enough grist to keep that rumor mill in business for generations.

So why is it, Russell wondered, that I’m a target for simply asking questions?

The idea of anyone finding Bagot's wealth bordered on fantasy; so why the knife? Why the intimidation? There was something to this, and there were those who obviously felt threatened by Russell’s recent inquiries. He had lived in Defiance a long time and knew how fast word traveled, so the speed in which his questions passed from one set of ears to another didn’t surprise him in the least. He remembered his father joking that a conversation at Billings’ Barber shop was the equivalent of a national radio broadcast, so he knew the power of small-town talk.

Until this point, Russell’s probing was little more than nostalgic curiosities. But now, what was only an exercise meant to entertain himself and satisfy his personal inquisitiveness as a means to break away from his hum-drum life, had taken a life-threatening turn. This was crazy—unthinkable. Whatever appeared to be so gosh darn important about Bagot and his timeless connection with Raleigh Beasley had become as intense as the local rumors alluded; a real life and death mystery that had the potential to encompass a scandal so deep and so rich, because it spanned nearly three decades without a single snitch.

Russell looked away from the knife, shocked by a thought that hit him as hard a brick to the face. If I’m treading on thin ice at the mention of Bagot and Beasley, then this town is not what it appears to be, and I don’t know who I can trust.
